The Irish Arts Review

Here is an interesting article in the present issue of The Irish Arts Review about Burtown House our family place and its historical connection with arguably the most important Quaker village in Ireland Ballitore. The Fennell’s were prominent members of ‘The Society of Friends’  for over 320 years and my ancestor John Fennell attended the first Quaker meeting in Lurgan, County Antrim in 1654, however supposedly my great grand father WJ Fennell was asked to leave the Quakers for his ‘fondness of driving around with uniformed flunkeys on his carriage’ – perhaps too ostentatious – Quakers do not like to be ostentatious – hence the design of Burtown.
